The Faculty of Social Studies at the University of Ostrava Is Launching a New Master’s Programme in Social Work Taught in English

Why study social work in English?

Current challenges—such as migration, poverty, climate change, and human rights—are issues that require a global perspective and the ability to communicate across cultures.

“Our goal is to create a space where theory meets international practice. By bringing together people from different parts of the world in one group, the learning gains a completely new dynamic and a multicultural dimension,” explains doc. Alice Gojová, Ph.D., the programme head.

Ostrava as a living “social laboratory”

Ostrava is an attractive destination for international students. On the programme’s website, the city is aptly referred to as a “social laboratory” — a place with an industrial history that is undergoing a massive transformation, thus offering an ideal environment for real-world, practical learning:

  • Field training: The programme includes 104 hours of mandatory fieldwork with tested and proven partners under professional supervision.
  • Modern curriculum: Students delve into topics such as Critical Social Work, Global Social Issues, and specialised elective courses (e.g., child protection in an international context or environmental social work).
  • Affordable living: Relative to many European cities, Ostrava offers a very reasonable cost for its high-quality lifestyle, which is a key factor for international students.

Who we’re looking for:

The programme is ideal for graduates with a Bachelor’s degree in social work (or related study fields) who wish to acquire a Master’s degree in an internationally recognised format. The admissions process is personalised and creative—instead of traditional tests, applicants are asked to record a motivational video in English and subsequently participate in an interview.

Quick programme overview for prospective students:

  • Programme duration: 2 years
  • Study form: full-time
  • Tuition: CZK 75,000 / €3,000 per academic year
  • Application period: opens 15 November 2026
  • Capacity: The programme is designed for a group of 20 students, ensuring an individualised approach with close contact with lecturers and a friendly atmosphere.
